Below are some updates from various Maggy teams:
Men's 6th Team
This Sunday the 6th team played host to Wigmore 1st team in their league 6 encounter.
Starting slightly behind time due to an administrative error on behalf of the opposition captain, the teams made their way to courts 7 & 8 after ruthlessly kicking social players off the courts until the AEGON match on 1 & 2 had finished. Thanks again to those players who postponed their social play to accommodate the match, it was much appreciated!
The first round of matches began with the MPLTC 6th team pairing of Tom Kemp & David Sheard locking horns with Wigmores first pair. Despite some strong hitting from both sides of the court, Wigmore came through a tight first set to win 6-4. Momentum stayed with the away team during the second set, securing the first rubber of the day with a 6-4, 6-2 victory.
The second pairing of George Bliss & Tom Hill came through a very close first set, winning 7-6 (8-6) thanks mainly to George's powerful serve and groundstrokes from the forehand side, along with some perhaps uncharacteristically composed volleying from Tom. The second set was again close (with both sides breaking serve a few times) but the home side crosse the line with a 7-6, 6-4 win.
1-1 at the break and the pressure was on all four pairs to push for the much needed victory. Tom & George, now up against Wigmore's first team pairing of Joe Perkins and Peter Thompson-Glover, struggled to impose themselves on the match against a strong and expeirenced pair who hardly missed a shot. Despite some hard battling, Bliss and Hill (sounding like a dodgy 1990's DJ duo - see Smashey & Nicey) succombed to defeat, losing 2-6, 3-6.
Kemp and Sheard, intent on victory, started all guns-blazing in their second rubber of the afternoon, racing to the first set with a couple of breaks.
The combination of Tom's trademark forehand and David's consistenly deep backhand returns proved too much for the opposition throughout both sets, recording a much needed win 6-2, 6-3.
So 2 a piece the match ended, another sunny sunday, and another draw for the 6th team in a challenging league.
The team are confident we can go out and win matches in this league to at least cement in our position in the 6th division, watch this space!

- 12-0 Walkover win v Camber 1
The teams were made up of the following players:

Special mention to Meg Leckie dropping only 4 games in 3 singles matches!!!
Men's Aegon 2nd Team
Our 4th fixture of the year saw us away to Grafton 1sts. We welcomed Ben Scarlett to the 2nd team for the first time, confident that he would continue his run of form from Spring, into the summer. It was a top meets bottom of the table match up, but in the back of the team captains mind was the sets-won % that might yet come into play in our bid to win promotion for the 2nd year running.
Gareth, Matt, Ben and Andy delivered solid wins in their singles, with average length of point being the most interesting statistic of the day...those porous acrylic courts really make you work for a winner! Having already won the match, Jason joined us in place of Ben and we re-focused and delivered a couple of doubles wins to make sure of it.
Now, much like Leicester a couple of weeks ago, we can look forward to bringing it home next Sunday June 5th at 10am. Facing Ashford 1sts at Fortress Maggie, nothing but a win will do it as we try to win Division 4-East! Hope to see you there.
